Ewa and ʻEwa, and their original distinction depends on the source. Despite having different meanings, they are related to the same origin story. Ewa without the ʻokina means strayed or wandering, while ʻEwa with the ʻokina means crooked or imperfect.
 
Ewa Beach is a stunning seaside community located on the western coast of Oahu. Ewa Beach is a place with a rich history that is deeply connected to Hawaiian culture. The name 'Ewa' itself means "crooked" or "bent" in Hawaiian, which refers to the shape of the land. This area was once a significant agricultural region, and it was home to sugarcane and pineapple plantations that played a crucial role in shaping Hawaii's economy.

Ewa, a place with a rich history, owes its name to the ancient Hawaiian gods, Kāne and Kanaloa. The story goes that they stumbled upon the vast and beautiful Ewa plains and decided to mark the west boundary of the new moku by throwing a stone towards the Waianae mountain range. Their aim was to encompass as much land as possible within the boundary. And thus, Ewa got its name. Sadly it's said to be believed that they lost it. 

Within the origin of the story of the name "Ewa". The story suggests that the area was named after a stone that was difficult to find or thrown crookedly. 

Thankfully the stone was said to finally be discovered at Pili o Kahe, near the Nānākuli Stream, where the boundary between Ewa and Waianae was marked. This distinction between the two areas remains close today, although some argue that the Waianae area begins at the power plant.
