Carpenter Ants in Your Home Are They as Serious as Drywood Termites

Finding large black ants inside the house can feel like the start of a costly repair story. The worry is reasonable. Carpenter ants and drywood termites both connect to wood damage, both can hide inside walls, and both can go unnoticed for a while.


But they are not the same problem.


Carpenter ants do not eat wood. They tunnel through it to make nesting space. Drywood termites do eat wood, using it as food and shelter. That one difference changes how the damage starts, how it spreads, and how urgent the response needs to be.

Carpenter ants and drywood termites damage wood in different ways


Carpenter ants are nest builders. They chew through wood and push out debris so they can create smooth galleries inside. They often prefer wood that has been softened by moisture, leaks, rot, or previous damage. A window sill with long-term condensation, a bathroom wall with a slow plumbing leak, or a deck ledger with poor drainage can become attractive nesting space.


Drywood termites are different. They live inside the wood they eat. They do not need constant soil contact, and a colony can stay hidden inside furniture, trim, attic framing, or door frames. Because they consume the wood, drywood termite damage can continue quietly until the wood becomes hollowed, blistered, or structurally weak.


That does not mean carpenter ants are harmless. A mature carpenter ant colony can expand, split, and create satellite nests. Over time, tunneling can weaken wood, especially if the nest sits in framing that already has moisture damage.

Carpenter ant frass often looks like coarse sawdust, sometimes mixed with insect parts. It may collect below baseboards, window frames, wall voids, or attic beams. The galleries inside the wood tend to look smooth, almost sanded.


Drywood termite droppings are more uniform. They look like tiny hard pellets, often compared to grains of sand or pepper. Termites kick these pellets out through small openings, so piles may appear under infested wood.


Winged insects add another layer of confusion. Carpenter ant swarmers and termite swarmers can both appear near windows or lights. Carpenter ants have a narrow waist, elbowed antennae, and front wings longer than the back wings. Termites have a thicker waist, straight antennae, and wings that are close to equal in length.

Other warning signs can include:


  • Rustling sounds in walls

    Carpenter ants can be heard in quiet rooms, especially at night.


  • Ant trails indoors

    Foraging ants may move between food sources and hidden nests.


  • Stained or soft wood

    This points to moisture, which often attracts carpenter ants.


  • Pellet piles below wood

    This is more suspicious for drywood termites.


  • Blistered or hollow-sounding wood

    This can happen with termite activity and sometimes with advanced ant damage.


Are carpenter ants as serious as drywood termites?


The honest answer is: sometimes, but usually for different reasons.


Drywood termites are often considered more directly destructive because they eat the structure they live in. If a colony stays active, the food source is the home itself. That can make treatment more complex, especially when the infestation sits deep inside walls, trim, or multiple pieces of wood.


Carpenter ants are usually a sign of two problems: an insect colony and a moisture issue. If they are nesting inside the house, something may have made the wood inviting. Killing visible ants without fixing the leak, rot, or damp area can leave the door open for the problem to return.


A small number of carpenter ants wandering in from outdoors is not the same as a nest inside the wall. By contrast, drywood termite signs inside wood usually deserve prompt attention because the colony may already be established where it is feeding.


So, carpenter ants in your home are serious when they are nesting indoors, appearing repeatedly, or tied to damaged wood. They may not carry the same feeding behavior as drywood termites, but they can still lead to costly repairs if ignored.

What to do if you suspect either pest


Start with observation, not panic. The goal is to identify what is happening before disturbing the colony or scattering insects deeper into hidden spaces.


Look for where activity repeats. Carpenter ants often forage along edges, pipes, wires, fences, tree branches, or rooflines. If ants keep appearing from the same wall gap or trim seam, that route matters.


Check for moisture sources. Common trouble spots include:


  • Leaky window frames

  • Roof edges and attic spaces

  • Bathroom walls and floors

  • Kitchen plumbing areas

  • Crawl spaces

  • Deck-to-house connections

  • Wood touching soil or mulch


Avoid relying only on store-bought sprays. Surface sprays may kill the ants you see while missing the nest. With termites, spraying visible areas can also disturb activity without solving the infestation.


If you find pellet-like droppings, wing piles, damaged structural wood, or recurring indoor ant activity, a professional inspection is the safer move. Identification matters because carpenter ant control and drywood termite treatment are not the same. The right plan may involve locating nests, treating voids, removing damaged wood, correcting leaks, replacing infested material, or using targeted termite methods.


Prevention starts with wood and water


The best long-term defense is to make the home less inviting.


Keep gutters clear so water does not spill into fascia, siding, or foundation areas. Repair roof leaks quickly. Seal gaps around windows, doors, utility lines, and pipes. Store firewood away from the house and off the ground. Trim tree limbs back from the roofline so ants have fewer bridges inside.


Inside, pay attention to slow changes. A window that keeps sweating, a soft baseboard, or a musty wall cavity can be an early warning. Carpenter ants often follow moisture. Fixing the moisture problem can be just as important as treating the insects.


Drywood termites need a different prevention mindset. Inspect exposed wood, attic spaces, stored furniture, and old trim when possible. Be cautious with secondhand wooden furniture or salvaged lumber, especially if it has tiny holes, pellets, or hollow-sounding areas.
